The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of Chinas new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl， it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures，and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant， helping him with simple calculations. My first research project involved determining whether the enzyme Uridylate Synthase “channels” the intermediate Orotidine 5’-mono-phosphate. This is a multifunctional enzyme and explanations for the evolution of this multi-functionality have been somewhat widespread throughout the literature. This project then questioned the basis of these explanations and offered new hypotheses as to why such multi-functional proteins have evolved. I wrote the computer modelling programs that integrated, through recursion, all of the relevant Michaelis-Menton rate equations. This analysis proved that a channeling argument was unnecessary to explain the available experimental evidence. I also performed some related enzyme assays in order to check several related hypotheses developed by Dr. McClard and myself.

Last year, as part of a larger project to explore the development of a GPS-Loran-C integrated navigation system, another engineering team I was on investigated the viability ad characteristics of Loran-C (Long-Range Aid to navigation TypeC) as an air-traffic navigation and positioning system. My responsibilities within the four-person team were to determine and model the sources of error contributing to the relative inaccuracy of Loran-C. I assisted in experimentally testing daily and seasonal variation and the effects of Earth’s conductivity and terrain. Moreover, I helped develop a MATLAB model for errors due to transmitter station synchronization. For an initial guess within a 6-kilometer radius of the true position, the average absolute accuracy of the model improved from 460 meters to approximately 100 meters. This project enabled me to demonstrate my ability to maintain good working relationships with my team members and advisor. I also discovered the importance of independent motivation and drive within a team in contributing to the success of the project.
