摘要:調(diào)查結(jié)果顯示:傳統(tǒng)的理工科大學(xué)英語(yǔ)專業(yè)的學(xué)生在撰寫本科畢業(yè)論文時(shí)遇到的主要問(wèn)題有選題時(shí)的困惑、資料的缺乏和研究方法的不足等。解決這些問(wèn)題不僅需要教師與學(xué)生思想上的重視,更有賴于學(xué)校的大力支持。

畢業(yè)論文(graduationthesis)是高等學(xué)校學(xué)生在畢業(yè)時(shí)所撰寫的帶有總結(jié)性的論文。對(duì)英語(yǔ)專業(yè)本科生而言,畢業(yè)論文同時(shí)就是學(xué)士學(xué)位論文(BAthesis),是他們申請(qǐng)學(xué)士學(xué)位的重要依據(jù)。它一般要求該生通過(guò)此論文的撰寫,體現(xiàn)他在某一學(xué)科內(nèi)已掌握的基本理論和所具備的初步研究能力。英語(yǔ)專業(yè)高年級(jí)教學(xué)大綱明文規(guī)定:“應(yīng)培養(yǎng)學(xué)生撰寫課程論文及畢業(yè)論文的能力”。近幾年,國(guó)家在陸續(xù)進(jìn)行本科工作評(píng)鑒,其中很重要的一個(gè)環(huán)節(jié)便是本科畢業(yè)論文的規(guī)范化管理。對(duì)理工科院校及師范性專科學(xué)校的英語(yǔ)專業(yè)來(lái)說(shuō),學(xué)科建設(shè)不齊全,辦學(xué)時(shí)間短,經(jīng)驗(yàn)不足,往往會(huì)造成某些方面的疏漏和問(wèn)題。筆者就此對(duì)本校的97級(jí)英語(yǔ)專業(yè)本科生的畢業(yè)論文的撰寫情況作了調(diào)查,從中發(fā)現(xiàn)了一些問(wèn)題并找到一些解決問(wèn)題的辦法。

一有關(guān)論文的一般情況論文撰寫的方向由指導(dǎo)教師填寫

學(xué)生根據(jù)自己的興趣選擇方向和指導(dǎo)教師,一般每人填報(bào)3位指導(dǎo)教師,由系里進(jìn)行統(tǒng)一調(diào)配,指導(dǎo)教師通常指導(dǎo)3到5人不等。為了給學(xué)生充分的時(shí)間撰寫出質(zhì)量較高的畢業(yè)論文,論文的工作從大四第一學(xué)期末開始。確定指導(dǎo)教師,探討選題,查找資料的先期工作按規(guī)定都在第二學(xué)期開學(xué)時(shí)完成。開學(xué)后便是與導(dǎo)師共同確定選題,開始正式的撰寫工作。最終成績(jī)的評(píng)定由多個(gè)成績(jī)綜合而來(lái):指導(dǎo)教師的評(píng)分,評(píng)閱教師的評(píng)分和答辯的平均成績(jī)。論文的評(píng)分和答辯的評(píng)分均有標(biāo)準(zhǔn)可依,但因標(biāo)準(zhǔn)過(guò)于籠統(tǒng),評(píng)分教師在實(shí)際操作時(shí)難以把握。學(xué)校對(duì)論文的優(yōu),良,中,及格的比例有一定的限制,故而最后的評(píng)分結(jié)果實(shí)難看出一屆學(xué)生的論文整體水平。指導(dǎo)教師反映這幾年來(lái)真正花了功夫,但體現(xiàn)一定質(zhì)量的論文卻鳳毛麟角。筆者調(diào)查了本校97級(jí)英語(yǔ)專業(yè)應(yīng)屆畢業(yè)生的論文撰寫的情況,并為了更深一層地了解情況,發(fā)現(xiàn)問(wèn)題,還向?qū)W生發(fā)放調(diào)查問(wèn)卷85份,回收有效問(wèn)卷66份。并采訪指導(dǎo)教師2人。

二調(diào)查結(jié)果97級(jí)學(xué)生共有85名,指導(dǎo)教師共23名,其中正高職稱3名,副高6名,中級(jí)10名,初級(jí)4名

根據(jù)問(wèn)卷調(diào)查,絕大多數(shù)學(xué)生(66%)選擇自己最感興趣的方向,其它學(xué)生選擇自己認(rèn)為較為易寫的方向。由于學(xué)科建設(shè),師資隊(duì)伍的不健全,不完備,我系尚未形成一定規(guī)模的學(xué)科體系,指導(dǎo)教師嚴(yán)重缺乏。目前每年需從大學(xué)英語(yǔ)、研究生英語(yǔ)教研室調(diào)用相當(dāng)于本系教師數(shù)量的指導(dǎo)教師來(lái)完成該項(xiàng)工作。各個(gè)指導(dǎo)教師根據(jù)自己的專業(yè),研究方向和興趣愛(ài)好確定指導(dǎo)方向,造成選題比較分散。這給答辯分組,互相評(píng)閱也帶來(lái)一定困難。有不少學(xué)科領(lǐng)域是英語(yǔ)本科生在4年學(xué)習(xí)中幾乎不涉及的,例如應(yīng)用語(yǔ)言學(xué),語(yǔ)用學(xué),跨文化交際學(xué)等。有些學(xué)生憑著自己個(gè)人的理解興致勃勃地來(lái)和指導(dǎo)教師商談選題,結(jié)果發(fā)現(xiàn)所選方向與事先的想法大相徑庭,因而頗為茫然。由此看來(lái),畢業(yè)論文的方向應(yīng)立足于學(xué)生4年學(xué)習(xí)的內(nèi)容。調(diào)查顯示各有1/3的學(xué)生認(rèn)為畢業(yè)論文的撰寫與4年英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)的關(guān)系是對(duì)四年學(xué)習(xí)的檢驗(yàn)和本科階段學(xué)習(xí)與進(jìn)一步學(xué)習(xí)的銜接。

筆者認(rèn)為要進(jìn)一步提升畢業(yè)論文的作用,做法有二:一是適度削減那些學(xué)生絲毫沒(méi)有概念的論文方向,使選題較為集中;二是拓寬學(xué)生的語(yǔ)言學(xué)、文學(xué)的眼界,除了開設(shè)普通語(yǔ)言學(xué)之外,開設(shè)有關(guān)其他學(xué)科方向的選修課。這樣學(xué)生可以自己選擇聽課,并為畢業(yè)論好理論認(rèn)識(shí)準(zhǔn)備。82%的學(xué)生認(rèn)為撰寫論文中遇到的最大困難是資料缺乏,尤其是原版資料。他們做論文的主要資料來(lái)源是本校圖書館和其他高校的圖書館或市圖書館(各占30%左右)。據(jù)調(diào)查有超過(guò)50%的學(xué)生花了最多的時(shí)間來(lái)查資料。由于我們是傳統(tǒng)的理工科院校,文科書籍?dāng)?shù)目極少,雖然近幾年大量購(gòu)買和訂閱了一定量的圖書、期刊,可是從論文選題覆蓋面的廣度和學(xué)生的人數(shù)來(lái)看,無(wú)論是圖書的種類還是冊(cè)數(shù)都無(wú)法滿足需要。資料中最至關(guān)重要的學(xué)術(shù)期刊,尤其是西文期刊學(xué)生都難以看到。缺少其他途徑的學(xué)生最后只得向指導(dǎo)教師借閱或去書店購(gòu)買。參考書目極其雷同造成了同一方向論文的內(nèi)容大同小異。畢業(yè)論文規(guī)定必須有3本以上的參考書?？上驳氖钦{(diào)查顯示一半以上的學(xué)生使用了6至10本參考書,另有25%的學(xué)生使用了10本以上。但另一現(xiàn)象不容忽視,那便是大多數(shù)的學(xué)生的參考書中只有一兩本原版書,僅有1人使用了6本。第一手的英文資料嚴(yán)重匱乏已嚴(yán)重地阻礙了學(xué)科的發(fā)展。50%的學(xué)生認(rèn)為論文中最重要的成分是層次清晰,主題明確。另有50%的人則認(rèn)為是選題新穎,有自己的調(diào)查和觀點(diǎn)。前者所持的是對(duì)文章的傳統(tǒng)標(biāo)準(zhǔn),而后者則強(qiáng)調(diào)了對(duì)正規(guī)的學(xué)術(shù)論文的要求。這說(shuō)明已有一部分學(xué)生了解了畢業(yè)論文的性質(zhì)和要求。研究方法是一個(gè)常常被指導(dǎo)教師和學(xué)生忽略的問(wèn)題。中式教育強(qiáng)調(diào)照本宣科,忽視獨(dú)立思考的能力。

成績(jī)?nèi)詰?yīng)介于及格與中等之間。

三討論面對(duì)資料缺乏,指導(dǎo)教師不夠,學(xué)生英語(yǔ)功底、寫作能力尚欠火候的局面,有不少教師認(rèn)為本科生寫畢業(yè)論文純屬勞民傷財(cái)

并舉出國(guó)外一些大學(xué)的做法,如不要求寫或選優(yōu)秀學(xué)生寫等。對(duì)此筆者認(rèn)為不但要求全部學(xué)生寫,還要上下一致,認(rèn)真對(duì)待。其理由有三:首先,盡管今后并不是所有的學(xué)生都會(huì)走搞研究,做學(xué)問(wèn)的道路,但高等教育在與社會(huì)需求相接軌的同時(shí)也需要一點(diǎn)超脫。除了讓學(xué)生學(xué)到實(shí)用知識(shí)之外,高校還是培養(yǎng)科學(xué)精神和訓(xùn)練科研技能的地方。其次,實(shí)用英語(yǔ)論,即只要學(xué)好實(shí)用英語(yǔ)的聽、說(shuō)、讀、寫,無(wú)須了解該學(xué)科的一些理論知識(shí)和撰寫論文的論調(diào)大肆流行,嚴(yán)重影響了學(xué)生的思辨能力的培養(yǎng)。多年來(lái),外語(yǔ)專業(yè)的學(xué)生偏重于記憶力和模仿力的訓(xùn)練,往往患了思辨缺席癥。和很多其它的文科專業(yè)比較,外語(yǔ)專業(yè)的學(xué)生缺乏邏輯思維和分析判斷的能力。其實(shí)這是大多數(shù)中國(guó)學(xué)生的通病,只不過(guò)外語(yǔ)專業(yè)的學(xué)生更重罷了。思辨力被長(zhǎng)期閑置,不僅阻礙了英語(yǔ)水平的進(jìn)一步提高,而且有礙于今后的科研工作。這也是造成口語(yǔ)課學(xué)生無(wú)話可說(shuō)或缺乏深度,全國(guó)英語(yǔ)演講比賽非專業(yè)選手絲毫不比專業(yè)選手遜色的一大原因。培養(yǎng)外語(yǔ)專業(yè)學(xué)生的思辨能力,給予他們更多的鍛煉思維,鍛煉筆頭功夫的機(jī)會(huì)已成為刻不容緩的任務(wù)。第三,合格的外語(yǔ)人才除了應(yīng)具備觀察力,記憶力,思維力和速讀能力外,還要具備一定的創(chuàng)造力。所謂“創(chuàng)造力”,就是創(chuàng)造性思維能力和獨(dú)立發(fā)展能力。而畢業(yè)論文的撰寫正是對(duì)學(xué)生創(chuàng)造力的一種引導(dǎo)和挖掘。雖然每年的畢業(yè)論文良莠不齊,但從那些論文中教師和學(xué)生都看到了創(chuàng)造力的存在和不足。鼓勵(lì)認(rèn)真撰寫畢業(yè)論文,發(fā)現(xiàn)論文中的新意和獨(dú)到的見(jiàn)解,獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)和推薦優(yōu)秀,對(duì)論文質(zhì)量嚴(yán)格把關(guān)等一系列配套措施將有力地推動(dòng)學(xué)生創(chuàng)造力的發(fā)揮。如果本科畢業(yè)論文工作只是為了走形式,應(yīng)付檢查而不注重質(zhì)量、效果的話,以上三點(diǎn)就無(wú)法成立,畢業(yè)論文的存在意義也值得懷疑了。

無(wú)論是指導(dǎo)教師還是學(xué)生都把它當(dāng)作正規(guī)的學(xué)術(shù)活動(dòng)來(lái)看待,無(wú)疑可以提升其存在的價(jià)值。我們可以把畢業(yè)論文撰寫中出現(xiàn)的林林總總的問(wèn)題分為主觀和客觀兩個(gè)方面。主觀因素包括教師和學(xué)生的認(rèn)識(shí)和態(tài)度,學(xué)生的認(rèn)真程度等;客觀因素包括資料缺乏,教師經(jīng)驗(yàn)不夠,學(xué)生語(yǔ)言功底尚不深厚并對(duì)論文選題缺乏基本概念等。主觀因素造成教師對(duì)學(xué)生的最后選題把關(guān)不嚴(yán)而使有些學(xué)生的論文選題偏大或意義不大(外校專家的評(píng)語(yǔ));有不少學(xué)生從初稿到成稿只修改了一至兩遍?？陀^因素則造成參考書較少并大量雷同,論文的語(yǔ)言質(zhì)量尚存問(wèn)題,成績(jī)的評(píng)定與標(biāo)準(zhǔn)有一定的出入等。由于其它理工科院系客觀因素造成的問(wèn)題較少,目前學(xué)校把多數(shù)精力放在了主觀因素造成的問(wèn)題上;而要解決客觀因素造成的問(wèn)題絕非一朝一夕之功,沒(méi)有校方大力支持更是舉步維艱。由于傳統(tǒng)的理工科院校英語(yǔ)專業(yè)的學(xué)科建設(shè),師資配備,資料建設(shè)等都有待完善,英語(yǔ)專業(yè)本科畢業(yè)論文出現(xiàn)的問(wèn)題自然要比綜合性大學(xué)或?qū)I(yè)外語(yǔ)院校多。本科畢業(yè)論文在一定程度上反映了學(xué)科建設(shè)的狀況。畢業(yè)論文工作所反映出來(lái)的問(wèn)題折射了學(xué)科建設(shè)中存在的問(wèn)題。要解決和改變上述問(wèn)題和現(xiàn)象,單靠教師自身的力量是不夠的。要改變現(xiàn)在的狀況也非短期所能達(dá)到。只有不斷改善辦學(xué)條件,不斷規(guī)范各方面的工作才能辦好英語(yǔ)專業(yè)。

There are many easeful stone chairs nearby the lake which provided convenience for us to have a fresh air under the shinny green trees.
